For What It’s Worth…

I have gotten tons of questions about what do I think about the situation at Clemson.  Actually, I haven’t really gotten many questions because nobody cares too much about what I think!  I mean Terry Don Phillips (Clemson’s AD) didn’t text, email or google chat me to ask what he should do.

Nonetheless, this is my blog so I will weigh in with my thoughts…

  • I like Tommy Bowden.  I think he has done some incredible things for Clemson Football.
  • I think Bowden should have been released at the end of the Maryland game.  Yeah, at that point we were still mathematically in the running for the ACC Championship (as we still are), but his lack of making any adjustment (i.e. offensive coordinator, quarterback) should have been enough for the administration to make a change.
  • I really hope that Swinney gets the job done.  Not just so we win out, but because he is a really great guy and I want to see him succeed.
  • I don’t want Bobby Johnson as our head coach.
  • We should have a full house in Death Valley on Saturday now that things have been shaken up.
  • Starting Willy Korn is a great move.
  • Releasing Rob Spence is another great move.

All in all, I think this will be a good move for Clemson.  It’s tough letting go of a head coach that has done so much for the program.  But, it would have been detrimental and counterproductive to Clemson Football to have not made this change.  We got GA TECH on Saturday.  Let’s see what happens.  Go Tigers!

Interesting perspective. I am not a fan of letting a coach go in the middle of a season. You can make changes…but that is tough move. I, too, like Tommy Bowden. And, I have walked in his shoes as a collegiate coach. That is a tough place to be and sometimes it doesn’t matter what offense or defense you have – the players do the work on the field. Or in this case, they didn’t do the work that would result in wins. I can remember going home some nights after losses thinking “why didn’t they just do what we taught them all week”. I just feel bad for a good coach to lose his job but more importantly he is a good man.

I do agree that Rob Spense needed to go!

Very true. I think the issue was more that Bowden was not willing to make the tough decisions. Like firing Spence. Also, it seems (via the players comments) that he had lost the respect of many of the players. None of them were responding to what he was asking them to do. In that regard, to me, it makes sense to go ahead and make the change.

Hope to see you at the game tomorrow!

i agree with steph that i’m not a fan of letting a coach go in the middle of the season. but if the players didn’t respect him then that’s HUGE. and yes coaches get blamed for players not doing what they were taught to do. but that’s how it goes sometimes. it must be really stressful to be a coach and worry that if you lose a game you might lose your job.
