Bonds hits #756

By now you have probably heard that Barry Bonds holds one of the most prestigious records in all of sports.  You may also know that he is accused of using steroids to accomplish this feat.  At this point, however, he has not been convicted.  As this scenario has unfolded I could not help but think of the correlation between what Bonds is going through and what we as Christ followers endure.

Stay with me here.  It’s funny how when we are doing great things the critics come out.  In Bonds case no one could have cared less if he was using steroids 3 years ago.  But, as he approached this historic milestone the accusations of steroid use started flying around.  Isn’t this the same in our walk with Jesus.  Think of a time that you were doing something big for God.  Doesn’t it seem that at this time people became critical of what you were doing?   Maybe you had just given your life to Christ or were following God’s commands for your life.  Whatever you were doing was met with resistance and criticism.  I know I have had experiences like this in my life, but I am encouraged that Jesus endured this same type of scrutiny.  So if you’re going through a situation like this just know that you’re in good company.

I really enjoyed reading the analogy, Matt. It is so true that people try to criticize when you try to do what God asks. I guess people without Christ can’t understand that as Christians, we can’t try to live a righteous life by ourselves, but Christ IN us gives us mercy, grace and strength that allow to make choices to follow God’s commands.

dude- comparing Bonds to Christ is insane!! Bonds is the biggest jerk in baseball. the comparison you made is horrible and so off the mark, man.

The Barry Bonds comparison was taking something of the world that everyone knew about and could understand and relating it to our walk with Jesus. In fact, Jesus did this same thing by speaking in parables. He told stories and met people where they were instead of expecting them to understand the Christian lingo.

On a personal note, I don’t care for Bonds either, but it helped to illustrate my point.

um, people care about it now because he is about to break a record of a man (aaron)who actually deserved it and did it the RIGHT way. bonds does not deserve this at all. he’s guilty as sin. pun intended, pastor. :)
